DKNG-411

Thursday, August 24th, 2006

If you would like to see me try to knit without frowning, cussing, or saying the word “tacky”, the Knitty Gritty episode Sushi For the Bathroom will air September 11 and 16th. There will be a new pattern up for sale that will tie in with the theme (available as a knit or crochet), and I’ll have a little FAQ up for the patterns after the first airing – I really need to, as I’ll be traveling from Sept 20 – Oct 4 with minimal internet access*. I didn’t get the air dates until after I’d made my travel plans, and I’ll admit that I don’t mind running off and hiding shortly after appearing on national tv.

Things to watch for:
- Me trying to keep things less confusing by just knitting continental, but knitting eastern uncrossed, catching myself, and switching back.
- The little undercurrent of panic in me produced by trying to remember what I’m supposed to be doing while also trying to stand up straight (but not overwhelm petite host), smile (despite sleep deprivation), and knit slowly. Also I bet my bra was misbehaving, so don’t look at my boobs (I know, now you are totally going to look at my boobs. How old are we?)
- Can you pick the segment that was shot on a different day? Hint: the segments were not shot in the same order that they will be shown in.
- Vickie having to smack me to get me back on track (um, no, I wasn’t dozing off…)
- Vickie’s shoes – she wears the cutest damn shoes and can stand in them all day long!

*Portland, OR and Seattle, WA – lys recommendations, snbs, meetups, etc. suggestions welcomed! I’m pretty familiar with both cities but have not been to Portland in a few years and I’m sure there are far more yarn shops than there were the last time I was there. I know that there are several internet cafes, but I’d rather spend my time with the people I’m visiting.

To-Do List

Live in Montreal

Live in Toronto

Go to Australia

Build raised beds and grow vegetables

Clean out studio and get solar panels (currently completely off the grid which is great unless you have a electric sewing machine).

Visit more US National Parks

Hike Haleakala Crater and more of the Volcanoes trails.

Tour New England with Mike F

Go on BBQ roadtrip with Miss Thyme and AJ

Buy a cottage somewhere (realistically, not here)

Build a giant solar-powered plush robot to carry me around. Maybe make it fly, too. (Go ahead, laugh – I have a better chance of doing this than of buying a home on this island).

Diane, Mo thanks you

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

…even if she has a funny way of showing affection. This is the only photo I could manage to get of Mo and the catnip sachet that did not look like a blur of fur and/or involved taking great risks to my health.

Mopillow

While I took this photo, she laid one dainty paw on my wrist and pressed down just hard enough to get the tips of her claws to rest on my skin.

Having an AOGG Moment*

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

After my Back-Tack 3 swap fell through, the organizers set me up with Chelle, an "angel" who contacted me a few weeks ago to let me know I’d be getting something in the mail.  I read her blog and got that little frisson you get sometimes, the feeling that in my ideal neighborhood, this is one of the people I’d want living on the same block.  I took notes on her reading list, read through some of her blog archives, and was really looking forward to seeing what she would make.  I saw the closeup teaser and was intrigued – from her blog posts, I already knew Chelle sews beautifully and does wonderful embroidery.

This really deserves better photos but I wanted to share asap.

Let’s start with the bag.
Asheepbag
Sheep!  Leading sheep!

Maple cream, excellent on mango bread.
Amaple

This odd bread-dough looking thing is maple cotton candy.  It is just as fun to eat and as tasty as you think it would be.
Amapletoo

And now, the stuffie.
Ablk

V is for Vivian
Aviv

…and there’s more!  Chelle made a flip doll – you reverse the skirt and taa-daa!
Awhite

My initials
Amk

I am just giddy with delight.

*Some people would be surprised if they knew how many times I read the Anne of Green Gables books when I was a kid.  Some people are saying "ah-hah!"

KSKS: Thank you!

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

I got my Knit Sock Kit Swap package from Diane today! It is fabulous and my camera is currently not speaking to my computer (how can you tell me you aren’t attached to anything when there is a USB plug shoved in your port?), so. Photos soon.

Okay, apologies to my camera – it was my computer that didn’t feel like communicating.

Left to right: drawstring bag with a hard base and sides hidden between the layers of fabric. Next to it, the matching sachet (which was made using a pocket from a pair of jeans). Then, a pack of aluminum sock needles! 4 sets of 5! This makes me giddy – it’s hard for me to find metal dpns in fine gauges here, for some reason. Then, lovely lovely handdyed wool from Cloverleaf Farms – I *think* this colorway is “seafoam”. Note the pair of beautiful blue glass and silver beaded stitch markers on the yarncake to the left. Then the adorable sheep note holder, holding up the card that came in the package. There was a box of maple tea and a packet of maple sugar candy in the package too – the box of maple tea was already in the kitchen for iced tea, and the maple sugar candy was, um, somewhere else? Thanks again Diane – the colors are lovely and I know I’ll be getting a lot of use out of all of this!

Hello Goodbye Hello

P1010008

That would be a box of beautiful, beautiful yarn sitting in the living room, just waiting to be sorted, wound into pull-skeins, and then mailed away. Yep, I get to swim in a heap of lovely Blue Sky Alpacas Dyed Cotton and Organic Cotton, only to send it away. Sound heartbreaking? Nope – it’s going to my pattern testers and sample knitters/crocheters!

I’m looking at this as a mile marker of sorts: this is for real, and getting serious. The knit version of the first upcoming pattern is just about done – the holdup is me getting good photos taken. The pattern layout, technical editing, and technical illustration has been done by Cindy Moore, a professional graphic designer who has also done a pattern layout makeover for Stephanie Japel. As you can see from the sample on Stephanie’s blog, the layout is not the norm! I like it a lot – it’s very user-friendly. I’m also trying to incorporate features that make Japanese patterns usable, like good clear illustrations, and I think Cindy has done a fabulous job with those as well. It’s the sort of thing that seems simple, but it’s like a perfect plain baked potato – it’s the kind of simple that takes skill and training. This first pattern won’t have a chart, as I’m still working on ways to make professional-looking, standardized charts. I’m hoping to use the Japanese standardized symbols, and have taken a look at Knit Visualizer, a software that comes in a Mac version. It looks like it might suit my needs, but I’d have to upgrade my operating system first, so that’s on hold for the time being. I might try to take an artsy-crafty attitude towards it and explore the charms of a handwritten chart for now.

Enough chatter! Off to wind yarn!
