7 Random Facts

Thursday, May 31st, 2007

I got tagged by Barb for the 7 Random Facts meme.  I’m going to break the rule about tagging 7 people – I think everyone I can think of has already been tagged, so if you want to do this meme, consider yourself tagged by reading this.

Figured that the facts would be more random if I asked other people.  Mr. Bobby, a buddy of mine since college, and one of my sisters contributed.

1. Had a rat-sitting job.  Fed them organic almonds.
I also fed them sunflower seeds and peanuts in the shell.  Rats need challenges and stimulation to keep them from getting loopy, I’m told.  The rats had been retired from lab-testing, and reportedly I was the only person the owner could think of who would not only be willing to do the job but enthusiastic about it.

2. Has a randomly recurring scent in her car named Harold.
I am not going to discuss Harold much, except to explain that naming the aroma made it easier to talk about.  I have not smelled Harold for a few months now, so there is hope.

3. Had a picture of a friend’s buttcrack on her fridge in Indiana.
Mr. Bobs, as a matter of fact.  He liked to explain it as a photo of a natural vista with Rapa Nui in the background.  Really not that graphic – his shorts were hanging a little low when the photo was taken.  I would gleefully post the photo here except I can’t find it now.  My housemate may have had something to do with that.

4. Allergic to mango pollen, but not the fruit.
It’s antihistamine season again.

5. Bootylishous (I know the spelling is wrong).
That comes from my very slender, trim, goes-running-with-an-Army-Ranger-daily sister, as a point of reference.

6. ADDish
I don’t know what she’s talking about.  Ignore my UFO heap.  You can’t see me sitting here with three other browser tabs open, my iPod, and an article that I’m writing on my computer screen.

7. Going back to school.
This one is from me – I’ve decided to bolster my BA with a CAFA from UH West O’ahu.  It’s something I wanted to do back when I was at UH Manoa, but the program didn’t exist at that time, and just thinking about grad school made me tired.

I’ve been tagged

Sunday, May 27th, 2007

Barb tagged me for the 7 Things meme – 7 random facts about me.  I don’t think it’ll be random if I pick them, so I’m asking others to pick a fact about me.  Will post when I get their picks.

p.s. – more puppy pics over on my Flickr album.

May 9 – 31, 2007
Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 4:30 pm, Sunday 1 – 5 pm, Monday closed

There are only a few days left to see this exhibit.  I’ve gone twice (and not just because May, Daven, and Shige-san are former classmates and a former professor of mine). It’s a very nice mix of 2-D and 3-D media and styles – something for everyone – with an overall theme of and about the Moon.  Fiber arts are represented with fabric pieces and some felted and knit pieces.

PSA: Crochet Me magazine

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2007

Kim Werker of Crochet Me is putting the word out that in preparation for Crochet Me v3.2, the site will be experiencing scheduled downtime:

Crochet Me is getting a bigger, swanker new server! Consequently, crochetme.com will be up and down and all-around this Wednesday, May 23rd (and possibly into the wee hours of Thursday the 24th); downtime might last for several hours at a stretch. This is normal, and we wanted to give you ample warning. Please don’t email us on Wednesday or Thursday if the site is behaving poorly. Thanks for your patience, kids!

Oh look, puppies!

Friday, May 18th, 2007

More photos on my Flickr page.  They are just about ready to go to new homes.  I have to confer with my brother to see which one we are keeping before we put them up for adoption and will be compiling info on their personalities (for example, if you would like a puppy that’s always at the head of the pack and first to figure out how to get over/around/through a barrier, may I suggest Bruiser?).

Mangopup

That would be Zeke in the background, checking to see if his butt is still back there.

Fingerless Mitts: Twisted Yarns

Tuesday, May 15th, 2007

1x1mittside
I finally got around to buying a hand model.  After searching online and at an art supply store, I found them at a big-chain bookstore (the one in Ala Moana, for those who are wondering).  I have been wanting one (or ten) of these for many years.

The fingerless mitt is the pattern I’ve been working on for Twisted handdyed yarns.  This pattern has gone through a few iterations; this one is the easiest as well as most comfortable version that also takes advantage of the gorgeous colorway (this is DK weight superwash, colorway Exile). Done in 1×1 ribbing, this can be worked flat in one piece and then seamed up the side, or worked in the round in one piece.  I’m working out a variation in a seed-pearl rib that might have some lace worked into it. I still need to format the pattern and submit it for approval; I will of course let you know if it will be offered in the Twisted shop.  This is a quick and fairly simple pattern with great gift-knitting potential!  Size shown is S/M (very stretchy) on a 7" (measured around the palm) model.

Snoozy

There are more photos in the Flickr album

I am trying to get pics of the parents but so far nothing that isn’t blurry.  The photo below of Zeke doesn’t show him off to best advantage.

Zdog

Zeke is totally flexing for the camera.

Zeke (daddy) is normally a camera hog, so maybe I just need to get them away from the pups.  Zeke is a Pit Bull/Boxer/possibly Rhodesian Ridgeback mix.   If he were a person, he’d be a hunky blond surfer type, outdoorsy, athletic, and laid back.  He is also, bless his heart, rather dim and very biddable.  He is friendly, loyal, and affectionate.  Some people think Pit Bulls and Pit mixes are all dangerous dogs, but that’s mostly misconception – Pit Bull Rescue Central has very good information on what one can expect from Pits and Pit mixes.  Zeke, like most Pit mixes, has a powerful physique and strong jaws along with a very loving nature.  He can be protective (ask me about the time he decided to protect me from a handsome young Army medic…geez, dog, I’d like to go on more than one date per year), but will stand down quickly (and, more than likely, be that person’s new BFF 10 minutes later).  Zeke enjoys eating coconuts and mangoes, sunbathing, flexing his muscles, posing for the camera, and getting brushed.  Zeke is food-motivated and affection-motivated.

Ferret

Ferret is very curious about the camera.

Ferret (momma) is a classic poi dog – we have no idea.  Some kind of Hound (Basset or Daschund) in the mix, most likely.  She’s on the small side and has short, solid legs.  Her instincts suggest hunting breeds (she is a danger to all birds), and she does have the instinct to bay, although her baying is not very powerful and tends to peter out.  When the Civil Defense sirens go off, she usually joins in.  When the sirens went off today, I didn’t hear any of the pups join in.  She is also a digger; likes to bury things, mostly.   She is friendly but not as people-oriented as Zeke is.  Ferret enjoys getting massaged by me, being groomed by Zeke, chasing mangoes, eating coconuts, annoying the cat, running, patrolling the perimeter, hunting chickens, and licking my toes.  She is very food-motivated and has a hard time sitting still – she will sit, then spin around in circles, then sit again, then spin…

The puppies look like they will be smaller than Zeke, and have the shorter legs of Ferret.  All of them have a very strong resemblance to Zeke physically, as you can see in the photos.
